Analysing Hawaii Five-O

Analysing Hawaii Five-O

1.   The features in Hawaii Five-o which suggested TV crime drama were the change of the lighting and how it was similar to what was going on in the episode. For example, when the lighting went dark it suggested that something major was going to happen.
Another feature in the programme which suggested TV crime drama is how the setting changed quickly. For example, when the setting was loud and crowded this is when the shooting would begin.Another feature in the programme which created a sense of TV crime drama is the sound effects and how the characters were acting fast. For example, when there was a high pitch of volume something sinister was about to happen or when there is a high mysterious sound effects this denotates someone is about to get killed.

2.   The subgenre in Hawaii Five-O is action, mystery and adventure as there is a lot of murder and fighting going on. This programme was mystery as there was a lot of investigating happening and how they had to find Chin. A lot of adventure was going on as they had to get from place to place on a helicopter to find the missing character. The subgenre of Hawaii     Five-O is mainly action as there is a lot of investigating and searching going on. The hybridity of Hawaii Five-O can sometimes be a combined elements which represent the programme as being adventurous and mystery.

3. Hawaii Five-O tell its story in a mysterious way as everything is structured to encourage the audience to continue to watch the programme. For example, There is a set up where everything is clam and relaxing, nothing bad is happening then as soon as the middle part starts there is mystery as Jin gets kidnapped. Then the ending is where Jin is found by his friends and rescued safely. This links to Todorov's Equilibrium Theory as the theory states that many films and TV shows follow a certain and Hawaii Five-O film followed a certain pattern too. Disruption is involved in this programme as an disruption of robbery occurs and someone is kidnapped. This is where everyone becomes worried and tries finding Jin. Reparation occurs too, where the character tries to attempt to find Jin and they start their adventure by tracking the kidnappers down. Hawaii Five-O links to Robert Mc Kee's classic five part narrative theory as it is broken down into five different parts. When Jin is lost everyone's tension starts to build and then everyone starts to investigate. Progressive complications this is where the story deepens and they find who the kidnapper was and where they are (prison). The Crisis, this is where everything starts to get worse the shooting begins to kill the other prisoners so Jin's friends can get in to save Jin. Climax this is where they find the kidnapper and they shoot him which makes the programme more interesting and mysterious. The Resolution, this is where they successfully rescue Jin put him in the helicopter and take him straight to the hospital to recover form his injuries where he had been stabbed. Everything finally turns back to normal and they all visit Jin at the hospital. Hawaii Five-O can link to 'Roland Barthes Action Codes, Semic codes and Enigma codes'. The first part is 'Action codes' through accumulation of details occur, such as facial expressions body action, this is where Jin's friends use their guns to shoot the other prisoners who were involved in Jin's stabbing. Enigma codes this is where the mystery was hidden of how they could find Jin as they had to trace where the kidnapper (Paul) and then find him and ask him where Jin could be. This is where the audience would be most interested and encouraged to continue to watch the rest of the episodes.
