Table for unit 4

Digital publishing
1. Magazine mock up.
The importance of having a magazine mock up is to ensure everything is set out correctly according to the magazine design. It is used for teaching, demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and other purposes. The magazine editor is the person who needs to produce a mock up as it is a set design which they follow. The impact of not following a mock up design of a magazine can lead to the magazine being designed in a incorrect way. There are different tools used in a magazine mock up such as thumbnail sketches, digital drafts. An example of a magazine mock up is shown above.
This clearly shows what a magazine mock up looks like.
Sourcing finance is an essential part when magazine editors are doing mock ups as it allows them to calculate what the overall costs would be and whether it meets their budget requirements. They would figure out the costs and how much they will be selling it for and whether they need add anything else, which means it will cost more. They would need to find freelances and staff which are available for modelling etc. As many models are taken up during a busy season so they would have to be approached beforehand. Problems can be caused if the right model or freelancer is not there to model for the specific magazine as this would mean the magazine cannot be produced. For example, for fashion magazine a board and confident model would need to be approached to model.
2. Health and safety- Risk assessment.
Its essential to make sure every digital publishing has a specific risk assessment as there can be risks everywhere and magazine editors should know how to overcome them. An example is working in a studio there could be risks of tripping over wires or getting electrocuted. This can be life threatening to people in the studio. The impact of not having a risk assessment when producing a magazine is it can lead to the company exposing themselves and being sued. Risk assessment is used by magazine editors or anyone who is wanting to do anything where there is equipment used and any hazards can occur. In a risk assessment, everything is broken down and there is explanations of ways of how to control
any measures where hazards can occur occasionally.
This shows a clear insight of what a risk assessment looks like for a magazine producer, who needs to know the risks of any hazards that can occur. There are several health and safety risks this is why a risk assessment has to be produced for every step that is being taken to keep staff, editors and freelances safe and protected. For example, if there is no control measure for a model having a photoshoot in a studio with wiring all around the floor then this can be put the model's life at risk as they could trip over. Preparing budgets and costs would need to be before and after buying any resources such as having a fan for the photoshoot to make them images look bold and board and many other equipment. The model would have a contract personnel as they are working under a specific contract for an employer to help them produce what they desire.
3. Templates and Formats
Its essential that magazine editor includes these in as it shows the audience what an actual magazine looks like and how it is put together. This includes font type when there is a different style font title to the rest of the magazine, specific images, text wraps or page layout. An example of page layout is when there is an image in the middle and different styles of font set out around the image, this makes the image in the middle the eye-catcher for the audience. It shows the digital editor where different things belong so they can provide templates and formats. The impact of not having specific templates and formats would make the magazine look untidy and would not be seen as 'magazine'. the formats and templates would be used when the editor is producing the magazine to ensure it meets the needs of individuals and is something people would buy or read. Its essential to identify the available resources for putting
An example is below which specifically shoes the layout and format of a magazine. The costing for templates and format should be calculated beforehand to ensure everything is being done within a specific budget to allow the editor to know their limit. It is essential to make sure the right staff and freelancers are hired to ensure the editing is done correctly. for example, making sure the editor has professional skills and the ability to produce ambulate work. Resources should be identified such as editing tools, text wraps, page layouts and alignments. Some of these tools can cost a fortune this is why budgeting is so important before actually beginning the work.
4. Screenshots
Screenshots are used to back up a specific point or to show evidence of what is being said. An example is if the editor is talking about how a model has been mentioned in the news due to being a good reputation to todays society, they can include a screenshot and back their point up. It is essential to include this as it gives the audience confidence that what they are reading is based on a true story and isn't a 'lie'. For screenshots it is essential that editors know the resources they need such as the tools and the correct keys to use. Therefore, it is important to make sure that employers have the correct staff and freelances who are able to work on this independently. For screenshots professionals would need to know what they need to produce so they are organised if they need to download something. For example, if an existing image is needed from another magazine then this would need taking from there and the editor would need to ensure they know where to get it from and how they would. If the editor needs to get a specific video to be part of the magazine they would have to specifically download that and put it onto the magazine. It is important to make sure the editor is aware of the contract they have with the personnel and that they know they are protected at all times, if anything was to happen. There can be several risks which would need to be assessed for the specific magazine making.

5. Copyright clearances
Copyright clearance are when digital editor are using another magazine's image such as a specific model. They would need to fill a form out for them to confirm the agreement and to make sure they are comfortable with it being used as it is their work. An example of copyright clearance form is shown across which gives a clear insight of what it likely looks like. Copyright is a form of legal protection given to content creators through the assignment of specific rights to works that qualify for protection purpose of using copyright clearances. The impact of not following certain instructions when using a product from another magazine can lead to the company being sued and reported. Digital editors should be aware of making sure they have enough money for the costs of using any copyright equipment and knowing whether it is within their budget.
Its important to make sure that any risks are assessed within the project before it is released publicly as this can cause serious problems. Magazine editors must sign a specific agreement if they are copying any sort of content from another magazine as it is their work and they have produced it using their own time. Its essential for prepare budgets and costs before actually signing to the agreement and confirming everything. For example, if the editor needs an interview video to put onto the magazine then they would need to go through a certain procedure to allow the higher authority to know what they are doing is legal. They would have a contract personnel to ensure they are working under employer and that they are protected when editing etc. Identifying the resources needed is another essential tool which employers, editors and professional should know about as when using copyright clearances you need resources such as textbooks, internet or any other magazine guides to give them further ideas of how they can further make their magazine stand out. Everything should be done in a legal and ethical consideration to ensure staff and freelancers are protected and safe during this project. While copyrighting anything if the editors has not signed the agreement then this would mean they are illegally producing work which can lead to the magazine company being closed down. This can cause a big loss in the making of the magazine as they would loose everything they have previously produced. Health and safety is another essential factor that should be considered beforehand as it allows staff, editor and freelances to be aware that they don't need to worry about anything due to signing the agreement. Any risks should be assessed during the procedure of producing the magazine such as if anything is lost while the editor is making the magazine then it is able to be brought back.
