Genre research Task
1. The genre i have picked is Horror.'The NUN'.
2. In horror films there is a lot of interesting content which engages readers to continue watching the rest of the episodes. The characters are dressed in dark gloom colours for example black, red, dark blue. The theme would be protection of the innocent, the settings in Horror films are in a haunted house or set at night time to create a much more vicious scene building tension. The setting of horror films would attract the audience as this would present the character as being creepy and scary. The signifiers for example, the theme would be a dark spooky place where there is no bright lights as darkness indicates the main story of Horror. There would be a lot action which could lead to someone being killed which could lead to the film becoming more interesting and engaging. Horror genre s have lots of different sub genres and closely related genres. For example, 'The Hills have eyes'. With horror films there is never an ending unless someone is shot or murdered which leads to the story of the film to become more interesting and exciting. The music in horror films is slow and spooky, having certain sound effects of what the character in the film are doing.
For example, in the Nun there is a lot of scary and creepy parts which can make the audience feel more interested and engaged. The repertoire of generic elements in horror is there can be creepy creatures for example, having a snake in some parts of the content to make the audience feel like it is scary and something suspicious is going to happen. The theme is horror would be evil can sometimes include revenge and crime as in the NUN there is a lot of scenes where the characters are evil and creepy. The setting in horror films would be spooky colours for example, a plain black backdrop with creatures coming off them, genre can be understood by the setting and how the film has organised each scene to be linked to whats going on. For example, if something is being murdered then there would be a blood background including weapons like knifes and guns. The style in horror films would be spooky slow music to engage the audience, there would be different camera angles to make sure different parts of the character is being shown in different ways. The generic signifiers in horror would be creatures like spiders, snakes, mask killers who would be making the film more creepy and interesting. The main features in Horror films would be the way the film has been edited. For example, leaving the not so interesting bits out and including the more spooky dangerous scenes. The character types would be evil, spooky creepy and would be dressed in maybe full black or more dark spooky colours.
3. Film makers have to make the horror film different to attract the audience which can then allow them to make money and succeed with their film making. One way film makers can make their films different is by changing the film's characters to make them look or sound more spooky and engaging. For example, films merging with one another can lead to interacting the audience and wanting them to come back to continue to watch this film. An example of a film which merges with another genre is Alien, as in this film the film producers have created it to be horror but with comedy in it so the audience are not getting bored and distracted. The cross generosity in horror films is they overlap with other films which contain a sense of horror in them as this is one way that the audience can be entertained and encouraged to continue to watch.
4. Classic examples of films:
- The Alien.
- The abnormal film.
5. Most horror films include a sense of humour but they subvert the generic convention for example, 'The NUN' might be different to 'The Alien' due to their being a bit of comedy in The Alien. However, they are still classed as belonging to the genre.
Extension task:
Repetition is where one product is repeated several times. For example, going to the cinemas to watch the same genre film again. Difference is defined by keeping some elements the same but changing some aspects of the product. its important to get the balance of repetition and difference right as it can really put off individuals from going to watch what they went for. For example, going to watch a horror film but they generally went for Comedy. If the balance isn't right for a product then it is most likely to be less successful. An example would be 'going back to the future' this is a film where there is science fiction but a change of the setting. Another example would be 'Alien vs human' this is where Aliens act differently to humans.
1. Media audience:
The audience enjoy watching movies which have action in them. an example of this would be horror as there is action as well as scariness. The audience show emotional pleasure, an example of this would be when conventions are followed such as someone being murdered which would be a pleasurable surprise and shock to the audience. Another way is visceral pleasure this is where physical fulfilment is shown, an example would be the audience showing physical fright at a certain horror scene. This can make the audience feel put off from watching the movie as they have been extremely shocked. Genres allow the audience to make decisions about consumptions that would take place in the certain film. There has been a mixture of characters involve which the audience may like. The intellectual pleasure in horror films wouldn't really be a shock towards the audience as the outcome of horror films is mostly similar. An example would be someone being murdered or a new character coming in.
